The Training Visa

  • A Training Visa is issued under Subclass 407 which permits Australian organisations to sponsor applicants on a temporary basis to take part in occupational training or professional development activities. However, the sponsors need to be approved as training sponsors to nominate an applicant for Visa under this category.
  • The advantages of Training Visa are one can apply for it from onshore or offshore location; applicant can live and work as a trainee for up to 2 years; the Visa holder can travel to and from Australia during the visa period; and family members can be included in the application.
  • Some of the other aspects of Training Visa are: Applicants who require registration, membership or a licence to work in Australia or their home country can prefer this Visa; Applicants who wish to gain on the job training can opt for this Visa; and those who require training in Australia as part of their study or sponsored by any Australian or any other government or management employee of a reputed organisation.
  • Other requirements of Training Visa are: the sponsor organisation should be eligible as a temporary activities sponsor; details of the training to be imparted needs to be submitted; each application will be scrutinised on the basis of sponsorship, nomination and visa application; any wage paid to the trainee must comply as per Australian labour laws and practices; the trainee must be 18 years or above; the applicant should have English language skill equivalent to IELTS 4.5 average; sponsorship letter needs to be submitted; there should not be any deviation in training from the one mentioned in the nomination form; volunteer work without wage can be accepted; on the job training apart from professional development training need to be a minimum of 30 hours per week.
  • Similarly occupational trainees need 1 year of work experience relevant to the nominated training program and occupation must be in the last 2 years or applicant must have completed graduate within last 12 months with qualification relevant to the nominated occupation training and should adhere to the minimum qualification requirement for the occupation. The sponsor and training provider needs to be the same organisation.
  • Applicants are not allowed to discontinue with the nominated and approved occupational training for which the Visa is granted. The applicant also can’t pursue work outside of the nominated approved occupational training program in relation to which the visa is granted.
