  • There are 6 subclasses under Parent Visa which are Parent Visa under Subclass 103 for permanent residency; Aged Parent Visa under Subclass 804 for permanent residency; Contributory Parent Visa under Subclass 173 for temporary residency; Contributory Parent visa under Subclass 143 for permanent residency; Contributory Aged Parent under Subclass 884 for temporary residency; and Contributory Aged Parent visa under Subclass 864 for permanent residency.
  • Some of the important points related to various subclass Parent Visa are: Parents of those who have settled in Australia as citizens, permanent resident in the country or holder of citizenship of New Zealand can apply for this Visa. The applicant parents needs to get sponsorship from their child or his/her spouse/partner. In case the applicant's child is a minor, a guardian or community institution can sponsor. The applicant's child should have spent minimum of 2 years before the application is submitted. The applicant parents need to undergo a test related to information about details of children residing in Australia and other places. Health and character certificates will also needed to be furnished, and all dues payable to commonwealth needs to be cleared at the time of application. Parent Visa holders can work or study in Australia and eligible to avail medicare. The child of applicant needs to furnish assurance of refundable support bond of sponsoring parent. Though there is no age limit for applicants but it varies.
  • The processing time for Parent Visa under Subclass 103 for permanent residency is up to 30 years. Application fees are lesser compared to contributory Parent Visa. There is no age bar and one can apply from within Australia or overseas. Health and character certificates is needed apart from assurance of support bond for 2 years. In cases where a person's parent is 65 years or above and under the phase of transitioning to 804 Visa, a bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants.
  • Elderly parents of 65 years or above under Subclass 804 of Parent Visa can get permanent residency. The application processing time is about 15-17 years. Application fees are lesser for this category. Application for this Visa can only be applied while applicant is in Australia. Health and character certificates is needed apart from assurance of support bond for 2 years. A bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants.
  • Contributory Parent Visa under Subclass 173 for temporary residency takes processing time of about 16-20 months. There is no age limit for this Visa, and the Visa is valid for 2 years. Application charges for Contributory Parent Visa is higher as compared to some other Parent Visa and it could cost about $50,000 towards government application fees. However, there is scope to spread the charges till the next stage of Visa or permanent residency which gives ease in terms of taking the financial burden of paying the entire amount of the fees for permanent residency at a time. The application can be registered from overseas location. Health and character certificates is needed apart from assurance of support bond. A bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants.
  • Contributory Parent visa under Subclass 143 for permanent residency has a processing time of about 20-26 months. Application charges for Visa is higher and it could cost about $50,000 towards government application fees. But there is no age bar for applicants, and application can be made from within Australia or overseas location. Health and character certificates is needed though not at the time of application submission apart from assurance of support bond for 10 years. A bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants. 
  • Contributory Aged Parent under Subclass 884 for temporary residency has a processing time of about 20-26 months. The applicants need to comply to the age limit at the time of application. It permits temporary residency for a period of 2 years. Application charges for Visa is higher but there is scope to spread the charges till the next stage of Visa or permanent residency which gives ease in terms of taking the financial burden of paying the entire amount of the fees for permanent residency at a time. The applicant need apply while residing in Australia. Health and character certificates is needed though not at the time of application submission apart from assurance of support bond. A bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants.
  • Contributory Aged Parent visa under Subclass 864 for permanent residency requires processing time of about 18-24 months. Application fees are higher for this category. Application for this Visa can only be applied while applicant is in Australia and applicant need to comply with age limit at the time of application. Health and character certificates is needed apart from assurance of support bond for 10 years. A bridging visa can be availed but there will be restriction on taking a job or studying in Australia by the applicants.
